This systems thinking insight comes from Stafford Beer and suggests that when looking at a system that seems broken or in need of change, it’s essential to look at what the system is actually accomplishing because that’s where the resistance to change is going to come from. As a corollary, the purpose of a system isn’t always its stated purpose.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

“Shows” is the key word here: a person’s actions are a more accurate reflection of who they are than their words.
