solving one problem only reveals the next one

From Max Yoder’s weekly note, inspired by Thinking In Systems:

In any system, there are limiting factors—circumstances that limit what the system can achieve.

As one limiting factor is addressed, another arises. There’s no way around this.

And I might say “is revealed” instead of “arises”. The next limiting factor was always there, you just didn’t know it until you removed the limiting factor in front of it.

For example, a small company might not have the cash to hire more people. Once they get an inflow of investment, cash isn’t a problem but now they find that there aren’t enough applicants. After solving that, the learn they can’t spare enough of their employees’ time to interview, etc.

Rather than feeling discouraged by this, Max finds solace in it, which I appreciate. I often fall into the trap of thinking that if only I cross this next item off my to-do list, I can relax. But of course, the list grows faster than I can work through it. We’re better served by building habits and systems that continually improve things over time, instead of incessantly chasing an imaginary finish line.
