“Optimization” is the practice of increasing a system’s short-term efficiency. Often (but not always) this comes at the cost of a system’s resilience and long-term efficiency, as the most visible candidates for removal in the name of efficiency are the slack, buffers, and redundancy that make a system resilient to shocks from the outside.
