From “Making the case to decision-makers”, an essential aspect of making positive change in an organization where decision-making isn’t a full democracy:

  1. Start with the conclusion.
  2. What’s the problem you’re solving and why does it matter?
  3. What are we currently doing about this problem?
  4. What are our competitors or industry leaders doing?
  5. What’s your solution?
  6. What’s the cost?
  7. What’s the cost of inaction? This really helps put the cost above in context.
  8. What’s your high-level execution plan?
  9. What decision do you expect to be made in this room? Who’s responsible for what decisions? What is blocked on these decisions?
