Clarity is Kindness
From a lovely interview with the Jewish-Buddhist teacher and psychotherapist Sylvia Boorstein on Parenting:
a measure for how clearly you’re thinking is how able you are to be kind
I’d like to remember, when I’m struggling to “find my kindness” (as I often counsel my kids) that I am not thinking clearly. Boorstein shares a mantra to use with oneself and one’s children to encourage self-compassion (which is a prerequisite to both mental clarity and kindness):
Sweetheart, you are in pain. Relax. Take a breath. Let’s pay attention to what is happening. Then we’ll figure out what to do.
