Money is a social construct—something that has value only because we all agree it does—which serves three main purposes:

  1. A store of value: something you can save to meet future needs
  2. A unit of account: a way to keep track of debts, what you owe and what’s owed to you by others
  3. A unit of exchange: something people will almost always accept in exchange for their labor or goods

Most money is created by banks loaning it into existence, not the government printing it

The origins of money

Debt: The First 5,000 Years debunks the myth that money emerged as a solution to the inconvenience of bartering, and reveals its historical origins in conquest and exploitation.
